Welcome to this fortnight's edition of Monash Minds. As the polarisation of seasons across the world seems to peak at this time of year (especially felt by those of us in the southern hemisphere), stories of our Scholars accomplishments can elevate those mid-seasonal blues.
This week, the Foundation acknowledges Scholars who have received notable awards and recognition, a celebration with the Governor of Tasmania, and showcase industry diversity in legal post graduate studies. We also recognise and share the progress of the Scholars Circle initiative!
The Scholars Circle is a Scholar led consortium initiative to fund within the community their own John Monash Scholarship. Initially this idea was conceived on a subway ride during the New York Scholars Global Symposium in 2019, with Jillian Kilby the 2013 BHP John Monash Scholar. Many thanks to Jillian for holding onto that thought and bringing it to fruition, by launching the Scholars Circle in May 2023.
This timing is inspired in part by the celebration of the 20th anniversary of awarding Scholarships but is also for many Scholars a recognition of their maturity and the positive impact that their Scholarship has made on their careers and the communities they serve.
The Scholars’ Circle is almost 30 percent towards its goal of being able to award a Scholarship year! With the applications for 2024 closing in just three weeks' time, there is an amazing opportunity for all Scholars who have not yet participated to get involved and be part of creating an opportunity for a future John Monash Scholar, like themselves. Last week, a morning tea generously hosted by the Governor, Her Excellency the Honourable Barbara Baker AC, a Patron of the Foundation and Emeritus Professor Don Chalmers, was held at Tasmania Government House to celebrate our 2023 Tasmanian Scholarship recipients, Eve Poland, 2023 Australian Universities’ John Monash Scholar and Bridget Dunne, 2023 Zelman Cowen John Monash Scholar.
The Scholars shared their plans, as they prepare to commence their overseas studies later this year. This intimate event was a warm celebration and send off for two outstanding Tasmanians, both graduates of the University of Tasmania. We wish them both good luck in their studies!

Public Lecture: It's Time for Change - New Perspectives on Body Image
Body image concerns are unfortunately very common. More than 43 percent of people in Australia are dissatisfied with their physical appearance. Negative body image can lead to extreme dieting, excessive exercise, the pursuit of risky cosmetic surgery, as well as overall poor self-esteem.
Associate Professor Gemma Sharp, 2007 John Monash Scholar, will speak on her innovative strategies to use the latest technology to address body image concerns and eating disorders. This includes her pioneering use of conversational artificial intelligence to provide thousands of people with the help they need to feel better about their bodies. Gemma will also share how our mobile phones can be a useful tool to both ‘sense’ when we are experiencing body image distress from our app usage and deliver highly personalised support whenever and wherever we need it - essentially personalised medicine delivered through your phone.
