John Monash Scholars' Circle
Shaping the future of Australia
Welcome, we are so glad you are here.
This year we celebrate twenty years of the General Sir John Monash Foundation awarding Scholarships.
To celebrate this milestone, our Scholars are uniting to create their own legacy: The Scholars' Circle.
This is a Scholarship for future scholars, by scholars. Participation by all scholars demonstrates the strength and maturity of our Monash Family and highlights our willingness to collaborate to develop the future dynamic leaders of Australia.
Welcome, we are so glad you are here. The Scholars' Circle was dreamt up by a group of Scholars at the Melbourne Symposium and bounced around our internal WhatsApp group chat receiving plenty of “thumbs up” and “love” emojis. It's been quietly considered and road-tested for desirability, inclusiveness, and feasibility. As our first 100% scholar-led initiative of the recipients of the General Sir John Monash Scholarship, we also aspire for 100% participation.
We are here to lead by example: As recipients, we have experienced a world class education, a boost to our careers and an increased opportunity to lead change in the communities we serve. We have benefited from our Scholarship. The Scholars' Circle gives us the ability to nurture future scholars and build on the collaborative community the Foundation has already fostered.
“… equip yourself for life, not solely for your own benefit but for the benefit of the whole community.”
General Sir John Monash
Scholars are stepping into The Circle: Participation is the key to this initiative, and we welcome any contribution towards our Scholars' Circle. The contributions will be pooled together to fund one whole Scholarship. It is important to our Scholars that the donation amount remain anonymous because participation in The Scholars' Circle will be different for every scholar. We aspire towards 100% participation through the donation of an amount that is meaningful, individual and appropriate for your stage in life. If each of the 248 Scholars donated $363, we would reach our annual goal of $90,000. If Scholars donate more, or pledge an annual amount, we will award more Scholarships and the Circle will continue in perpetuity.
Some examples of giving: A member of the Class of 2013 might find it meaningful to donate $2013, meanwhile, a person from the Class of 2022 might find it appropriate to skip one coffee a week and donate that amount through a recurring weekly pledge. We understand that everyone's situation is different, especially those who are still studying. All contributions to the community goal are valued and will make a difference to another Scholar like yourself.
We are so pleased to confirm that donation amounts are anonymous and all contributors will become members of the Scholars' Circle, with your name recognised within your year group below.
This is our scholarship, and we look forward to your participation.
The General Sir John Monash Foundation holds a Deductible Gift Recipient (DGR) status with the Australian Tax Office and is registered with the Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission (ACNC). Donations of $2 or more are tax deductible (ABN 78 099 065 184).
The General Sir John Monash Foundation is committed to protecting the personal information provided by you. More information about how we may use your data is on our Privacy Policy.
Jillian Kilby
"With every scholar participating in the Scholars Circle we collectively demonstrate our gratitude for the opportunities we have been afforded. For me, this year marks ten years since I received my scholarship. I am contributing to the scholars circle to ensure an additional scholarship is awarded next year; to ensure another person will be able to equip themselves for leadership in Australia through an international education."
Dr. James Daniell
"To have a Scholars Circle John Monash Scholar will give one more Australian the chance to follow their own dreams and ideas, allowing them to choose the best institution and platform anywhere in the world for their field. It will also give them the funding to travel, and attend conferences and meetings to bring their own ideas to reality. I was lucky enough to be able to bring my rapid damage estimation methodology after disasters to the world nearly 15 years ago, thanks to those who provided the funding for my scholarship, and it has since facilitated tens of billions of dollars of crisis funding, helping many people every year globally in disasters such as Ukraine, Turkey, Tonga and Haiti to name a few."
Chris Raine
"To be a John Monash Scholar is both a privilege and an obligation - it is a privilege that allows one to be educated at the best universities in the world, but with that privilege comes the obligation to use that education to fight for a better world, no matter the personal cost nor potential for failure."
Dr. Tom Hanna
"I have spent the last 20 years benefiting from the work of the Monash foundation, which was enabled by the giving of others. I benefit even more by giving back in order to continue growing the scholars' community, and through it, Australia."
(Dr. Tom Hanna is a current member of the Chairman's Circle.)
