Further Information and Resources
Q. When do applications open?
A. 2024 applications open May 1 and close July 1, 5:00 pm AEST. The Foundation accepts applications once a year and applications will not be accepted outside of this timeframe.
Q. My proposed study starts later this year, am I eligible to apply in the current round?
A. No, you are not eligible. To be eligible for the John Monash Scholarship you must plan on undertaking your postgraduate degree the year after application and selection. That is, you may apply for the Scholarship in 2024 for a Masters or PhD commencing at any stage in 2025.
Q. I am in my final year of my Bachelor (undergraduate) degree. Can I still apply?
A. Yes you can apply. You will need to have completed your degree by the end of this year. The application requires you to give evidence of your academic excellence; this includes providing your latest academic results.
Q. I am part-way through an overseas postgraduate degree. Can I apply for the Scholarship to cover the remainder of my degree?
A. No, the Scholarship is for a postgraduate degree commencing the year after you apply.
Q. Do I need to apply or be accepted into my chosen overseas university to receive the Scholarship?
A. You do not need to apply or be accepted into your chosen overseas university when you apply for the Scholarship. Depending on the application intakes for your proposed course, you may choose to apply to an institution after being successfully awarded a John Monash Scholarship.
Q. The PhD/DPhil I wish to study is a four-year degree. Is there additional funding available to cover the fourth year of my PhD/DPhil?
A. No, the John Monash Scholarship supports overseas postgraduate study up to a maximum of three years.
Q. Does the General Sir John Monash Foundation have additional sources of funding available for postgraduate study, apart from the John Monash Scholarships?
A. No, the Foundation supports overseas postgraduate study solely through the John Monash Scholarships.
Q. Is it possible to apply for the Scholarship to support two separate postgraduate degrees?
A. The Scholarship funding may only be used to support a single postgraduate degree. For a postgraduate degree structure to be eligible for the Scholarship, it must be a full degree that is applied to and accepted by one application. For example, a full Masters or PhD. Applications for a dual Masters are only suitable if they fit this requirement of one application to guarantee entry to both, such as in the Oxford 1+1-style double Masters.
Q. I wish to study my Honours year at an overseas university. Am I eligible?
A. No, the Scholarship is for a Masters (1 year or 2-year Scholarships) or a PhD (3-year Scholarships.)
Q. Who should I nominate as referees?
A. You must have three references submitted with your application. Referees should be the most senior people who can speak to your excellence and leadership capabilities, whether they be an academic, professional or personal referee. The Foundation recommends you select the most appropriate combination of referees based on your career stage; however, it is not recommended to submit personal references only.
Q. Is there an average grade (distinction/high distinction) required for someone to be eligible to apply?
A. There is no set GPA requirement as a part of the application eligibility criteria. However, the expectation is that the applicant can evidence their academic ability and their capacity to successfully manage the academic rigour of the relevant postgraduate degree.
Q. When will I hear if my application is being progressed?
A. Applications close at 5:00 pm on July 1, 2024. All applicants should expect to hear if they are being progressed to the first interview round around mid-August 2024. This notification will be via email.
Q. Can I apply for other Scholarships and still obtain a John Monash Scholarship?
A. Applicants who have been successful in securing a Rhodes, Fulbright or Ramsay Scholarship for the same academic year are ineligible for a John Monash Scholarship. You are unable to hold the Rhodes, Fulbright or Ramsay Scholarship concurrently with the John Monash Scholarship. Please be transparent in your application regarding other scholarships that you have applied for.
If you have been awarded a Rhodes, Fulbright or Ramsay Scholarship for past study you are eligible to apply for a John Monash Scholarship for further postgraduate studies.
Q. How many people apply for a John Monash Scholarship each year, and how many Scholarships are available?
A. We usually receive over 300 applications each year. From those, about 100 applications progress to the first-round interviews. A final 40 candidates progress to the final (national) stage of interviews. Typically, we award 14 – 20 Scholarships each year (with some year-to-year variation.)
Q. I was unsuccessful in my application for the John Monash Scholarship last year, am I able to apply this year?
A. Yes. If unsuccessful, written feedback on previous applications can be provided upon request from December to February.
Q. Scholarship recipients are awarded under specific titles, e.g., the 2024 Queensland Government John Monash Scholar. What is the significance of these titles?
A. Scholarship titles refer to the generous patrons who have facilitated the Scholar's education. Using the full title is an acknowledgement of the valuable support that has enabled the Scholar to take up the Scholarship.
