Prime Minister Scott Morrison Announces $5M Funding for Bob Hawke Scholarship
On Parliament’s first sitting day, Wednesday 3 July, Scott Morrison paid tribute to the late, legendary Labor Prime Minister Bob Hawke and announced the government will provide $5M to the General Sir John Monash Foundation to fund a perpetual scholarship in honour of this much-loved leader.
The Foundation is proud to be entrusted with the stewardship of the Bob Hawke Scholarship. The Scholars selected through the rigorous Foundation selection process will be known as the Bob Hawke John Monash Scholar.
The Scholarship will support Australians with great leadership potential to study overseas for a post-graduate qualification in any field and at any university, for up to 3 years. It will support scholarships awarded into the future, to support the education of this country’s brightest minds, who will tackle the greatest challenges we face across all areas of endeavour including medicine, sustainability, social sciences, law and economics as well as foster our national identity through literature and the arts.
This generous commitment is a fitting investment in education, Australia’s young people and the future leadership of our nation, all of which Bob Hawke was so deeply committed to. It is a gracious bi-partisan celebration of inspiring leadership and a celebration of a great Australian.
The Leader of Opposition, Anthony Albanese ‘welcomed the announcement by the Prime Minister of the government’s Bob Hawke John Monash Scholarship’ and agreed it was appropriate to recognise a young person and give them support in Bob Hawke’s name. “Bob Hawke was always supportive of young people …”.
The purpose of the General Sir John Monash Foundation is to raise and manage funds for post-graduate scholarships, to administer the awards and support the alumni network.
John Monash Scholarships foster leaders, expertise and international networks, building Australia’s capabilities for the future.
This investment in the John Monash Scholarship by the government is a wonderful affirmation of the value of post-graduate education and the fostering of leaders across all sectors of society.
