Excitement as WA Government announces perpetual scholarship
6 August 2024
WA Minister for Education Dr Tony Buti has announced a perpetual Western Australian Government John Monash Scholarship for an outstanding university graduate from the State to study overseas at any leading institution, commencing in 2025.
The announcement was made on August 6 at the fourth event in the John Monash Leadership Series, hosted by the University of Western Australia, and will enable at least one outstanding graduate of a WA university, each year, to undertake their postgraduate studies.
Successful scholars must be graduates of a Western Australian university. The Government is keen to advance applicants who have either attended a WA public school, were first in the family to attend university, come from a low socio-economic background, are an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander person or come from a culturally and linguistically diverse background or live with a disability.
Dr Buti said he looked forward to the scholarship elevating West Australian Scholars, enabling them to become critical leaders across law, business, the arts, policy, medicine and science.
“It is through forward-thinking collaborations like these that Western Australia can make considerable progress towards solving challenges that we have a real duty to face, in the way that the late General Sir John Monash did throughout his life, whether in the military, academic leadership, business, or in public service," Dr Buti said.
Recipients will receive a contribution of $80,000 towards tuition and living expenses for each year of study, up to a maximum of $240,000 for three years of study, in addition to travel support.
Foundation CEO Paul Ramadge said: “This announcement of a perpetual scholarship helps position Western Australia at the forefront of the knowledge economy and nation-building.
“Western Australian scholars will be thanking the Cook Government of 2024 for many, many years to come.”
The announcement brings Western Australia in line with the governments of NSW, Victoria and Queensland, which all provide perpetual John Monash Scholarships.
