Inaugural Queensland Government John Monash Scholarship awarded to 2024 Scholar Famin Ahmed
University of Queensland graduate and former Kenmore State High School student Famin Ahmed has been awarded the first Queensland Government John Monash Scholarship, a newly announced commitment from the Palaszczuk Government. Queensland now joins Victoria and NSW as providing perpetual support for John Monash Scholars to study overseas.
Next year, Famin will travel to the University of Oxford in England to undertake a Master of Public Policy. Her ambition is to improve the way the Australian legal and policy system deals with culturally diverse women experiencing domestic violence.
Famin works as a pro bono lawyer, providing assistance to women in situations of domestic violence. Outside work hours, she sells her hand-sewn hats, raising money for the Women’s Legal Service in Queensland.
The Queensland Government’s scholarship will continue to be awarded to future graduates from the state who either attended a Queensland state school, are the first in their family to attend University, have lived in regional Queensland, are from a low-socioeconomic background, identify as being Indigenous or are from a minority ethnic background.
The Honourable Grace Grace, Queensland’s Minister for Education, Industrial Relations and Racing, said: “I am so pleased to announce Famin Ahmed has won our first sponsored Queensland Government John Monash Scholarship. Famin won the scholarship to further her studies and build on the important contribution she is already making to disadvantaged communities in Queensland.”
