2019 John Monash Scholars' Global Symposium
On the 16th – 17th December 2019, 71 John Monash Scholars came from around the globe and Australia to attend the Foundation’s 4th Global Symposium hosted by the University of Melbourne.
The theme for the Symposium was ‘Beyond Boundaries: Transitions to Sustainability’ and focused on how interdisciplinary thinking can foster creative new approaches to change. Over two days, scholars discussed and debated key abstract challenges and concrete problems at the intersection of change, adaptation and sustainability. To view the full program, please click here.
The Symposium provided a wonderful opportunity for new collaborations to form, with John Monash Scholars working across disciplines to seek new insights and solutions to important sustainability challenges.
It was a stimulating few days and a great gathering of John Monash Scholars who represented cohorts from the first awards in 2004, to almost all the new 2020 Scholars. A Cocktail Reception was held on the first night, graciously hosted by Professor Duncan Maskell, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Melbourne. It was a delightful occasion where we were joined by many supporters and friends and entertained by some of the talented musicians among the Scholars: Michael Grebla, Jonty Coy, Miranda Gronow, Harrison Steel and Kathryn Roberts-Parker.
We thank our friends at the University of Melbourne for generously hosting the Symposium for us in the beautiful and iconic, heritage-listed ‘Old Quad’.
