Equitable healthcare for regional Australia
Dr Laura Dryburgh, 2022 Chairman’s Circle John Monash Scholar was recently featured in the Newcastle Herald. In an interview with the regional newspaper, Laura discussed her goal to work in a cross-sectoral role that combines clinical work with health policy to tackle broader societal problems. Laura is focused on delivering quality healthcare to Australians in regional and remote locations to ensure everyone has access to equitable healthcare.
From Newcastle University, The University of Pittsburgh and Brown University, Sam Parker has had an illustrious academic journey as he strives to make a difference in the lives of people living with spinal cord injuries. The 2020 Susan and Isaac Wakil John Monash Scholar is using his Scholarship to study a PhD. in Biomedical Engineering and describes Brown as a ‘fortunate choice.’ At Brown, he has been able to collaborate with extremely well-known scientists and make positive changes beyond what he had hoped for. Emma Garlett is a Nyiyaparli, Yamatji and Noongar woman as well as the 2022 Wesfarmers John Monash Scholar. She has recently spoken to Lawyers Weekly on how young lawyers need to educate themselves holistically to change the Indigenous narrative for good. This includes having self-awareness, education and understanding of the history of Australian law – to approach the protection of Aboriginal culture from all angles. Emma is a Curtin University graduate who will go to Oxford University later this year to study a Master of Business Administration and a Bachelor of Civil Laws.
Tackling the challenge of bladder cancer
Dr Ashray Gunjur is the 2021 Helen and Michael Gannon John Monash Scholar and medical oncologist. Ashray is passionate about improving cancer patient outcomes and is currently completing a PhD in Biological Science (Wellcome Sanger Institute) at the University of Cambridge. He recently co-authored an academic article published by SpringerLink, Adjuvant therapies for non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer: advances during BCG shortage.
Decarbonising steel
Alexandra (Alli) Devlin, 2020 Commonwealth Bank John Monash Scholar, has recently co-authored an academic article published in Elsevier, Regional supply chains for decarbonising steel: Energy efficiency and green premium mitigation. Utilising an Australia-Japan case study, the article explores the process for the accelerated decarbonisation of steel. Alli is a Civil and Environmental Engineer pioneering sustainability in the construction industry. She is currently completing her DPhil in Engineering Science at the University of Oxford.
2022 Australia Day Honours
Congratulations to Lee Liberman AM, Deputy Chairman of the General Sir John Monash Foundation, on being recognised in the 2022 Australia Day Honours. Lee has been awarded the prestigious Member of the Order of Australia (AM) for her significant service to the Jewish community through not-for-profit and education organisations. This news has been celebrated across the media on J-Wire and The Australian Jewish News.
We also extend our congratulations to former Foundation Director and Honorary Life Governor, Dr Jane Elizabeth Wilson AO on being conferred the Officer of the Order of Australia (AO) for distinguished service to business, government, education, health and aged care.
