The John Monash Foundation Leadership Academy held the event Leadership for the Future in Times of Challenge, with Professor Bruce Dowton, generously hosted by the Judith Neilson Institute for Journalism and Ideas in Sydney on Tuesday June 21.
Professor Dowton's address covered a wide arc of leadership reflections - drawing on his extensive global experiences - and a unique approach to a subject he has researched in extraordinary detail throughout his career. For those fortunate to be in the audience there were insights rarely found in such presentations and Professor Dowton has a singular narrative style that made the evening engaging, at times humorous and always thought provoking.
The opportunity to be in person provided the chance for extensive Q&A and latterly informal discussions in the fabulous JNI auditorium and ante-room. After the event, some 2022 scholars took the opportunity to catch up at a local venue for a lively evening, comparing notes before they head overseas.
Emma Garlett, 2022 Wesfarmers John Monash Scholar, is a Nyiyaparli, Yamatji and Noongar Traditional Owner from Geraldton, now living in Perth. Emma had an opinion piece published in The West Australian recently discussing constitutional recognition.
Emma will pursue both the Master of Business Administration (MBA) and the Bachelor of Civil Laws (BCL) at the University of Oxford, focusing on integrating Traditional Owner Native Title rights and interests in mining and environmental, social and governance (ESG) strategy and legal decisions to further the protection of Aboriginal cultural heritage, recognise Indigenous knowledge and science and promote self-determination.
Independent group of female experts represent women across NSW
Jillian Kilby, 2013 BHP John Monash Scholar, completed a Master of Business Administration and Master of Public Policy at Stanford University. Her skill and expertise are a valued part of an independent panel set to help deliver a budget with women at it’s core. It was found that there is overwhelming consistency in what women want in regards to nature and scale of the long-term generational reform. The panel made specific recommendations about how the policies and investments must be implemented – informed by, and in collaboration with, the unique voices and experiences of the women themselves, wherever they are. She continues to run her infrastructure advisory firm with the mission to move horizon infrastructure projects from planning shelves to be shovel ready.
