You can’t sanction what you can’t see
The war in Ukraine has seen sanctions levelled against kleptocratic wealth. 2017 Commonwealth Bank John Monash Scholar Dr Vafa Ghazavi argues that you can’t sanction what you can’t see. His article published in The Guardian explains that much more needs to be done in order to trace the owners of real estate and luxury assets in order to truly bring corrupt networks and autocrats to account. Vafa is a Carr Center Fellow at Harvard University and executive director for research and policy at the James Martin Institute for Public Policy.
Lieutenant Hannah Phelps, 2021 Chairman’s Circle John Monash Scholar is currently studying a PhD in Atmospheric Science (Glaciology) at the University of British Columbia in Canada. Listen to Hannah in our latest episode of The Scholars Podcast as she discusses her background in mathematics which she uses to observe the behaviour of glaciers over time and how her work as a meteorologist, serving in the Australian Navy and her time working in Antarctica inspired her to persue her PhD in Glaciology.
Could our universe plausibly be a high-fidelity computer simulation? In the last few years, this question has been taken more seriously by physicists and computer scientists. Heather Muir is the 2018 ANZAC Centenary John Monash Scholar currently completing her PhD in Physics at Cambridge University. Her scientific research entitled Emergence of the Fused Spacetime from a Continuum Computing Construct of Reality was published by Springer Link. Her research demonstrates how new theories based on the laws of computation can be used to explore fundamental physics and the foundations of our reality.
