John Monash Scholars lead the way in prestigious NHMRC Investigator Grants
The Foundation is proud to congratulate John Monash Scholars Professor Mark Dawson (2006) and Dr Davis McCarthy (2011), who have been awarded Investigator Grants from the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC). These highly competitive grants are awarded to world-leading health and medical research projects improving the lives of all Australians.
Mark's research at Peter Mac has been awarded $2.26 million and will focus on improving outcomes for cancer patients by targeting the epigenome, improving efficacy of existing and finding new therapies to improve the survival of patients with a broad range of cancers. We also congratulate Mark’s wife, Professor Sarah-Jane Dawson, who has also been awarded a grant for her research to advance the use of ctDNA to serially follow patients and individualise treatment decisions in cancer management across several cancer types.
Davis' research at St Vincent's Institute (SVI) will use the $1.3 million grant focus on bioinformatic tools and their machine learning capability to harness large and complex biological data sets. The developed models and software will be used for breast cancer screening programs and analysis of large-scale single-cell genomics data.
