Dr Garang Dut shows how COVID has exposed the fragility of Melbourne's South Sudanese community
The Australian and New Zealand Journal for Public Health (Wiley) has published 2017 Roth/Segal John Monash Harvard Scholar Dr Garang Dut’s article entitled: The experience of South Sudanese migrant families during the COVID-19 pandemic in Melbourne. In this article, Garang draws upon his personal experiences as a Sudanese refugee to make valuable recommendations for crisis management in respect to CALD communities. Earlier this year the SBS shared Garang’s story in a feature article which highlighted his incredible journey from refugee to Doctor and now Australian Federal Government Advisor.
John Monash Scholars design a world-first graduate program: Applications are open for 2022
Professor Katherine Daniell from the Australian National University (ANU) is convening Australia’s first graduate program that focusses on ensuring the safety and sustainability of AI systems at scale. Katherine (2005 John Monash Scholar), in collaboration with Dr Amy McLennan (2009 John Monash Scholar), has been designing and prototyping the program since it first launched in 2019, teaching a new branch of engineering into existence to address the complex challenges of emerging technological systems.

Something Digital 2021
Watch out for Jessie Hughes this October as she presents at the Something Digital 2021 conference. The 2020 Lee Liberman John Monash Scholar will be speaking alongside other well-known digital titans such as the Creative Director of Google and the Chief Operation officer at Reddit. Something Digital was created in 2018 and its aim is to strengthen the digital ecosystem in Queensland. Earlier this week Jessie also gave a keynote to the Women Who Code network about the fascinating intersection of creativity and emerging technology.
