Congratulations to Dr Jonathan Kummerfeld, 2010 John Monash Scholar who has received a DECRA grant from the Australian Research Council. This prestigious grant will allow him to develop new methods for data collection techniques so computers can convert requests into English. This should provide significant benefits to researchers and businesses by broadening the accessibility and efficiency of data analysis which will enable faster and wiser decisions. Jonathan will relocate back to Australia in 2022 to commence work at The University of Sydney and plans to recruit a dynamic research team from both the Northern and Southern hemispheres.

Since graduating from Bond University in Queensland, Holli has worked at Herbert Smith Freehills as a founding member of its Digital Law Group and has undertaken a secondment to the Australian Human Rights Commission’s Human Rights and Technology project. Behind the scenes of Jessica's Retro Futurism project
2021 Victorian John Monash Scholar Jessica Coldrey has shared a behind the scenes video which encapsulates the highlights of her recently completed residency program at the Yarra Ranges Tech School. Watch her work with an incredible universal mechanical arm, 3D printer, lasers, drone and see how she engages with technology whist completing her Retro Futurism project. It’s this project that recently led to her artwork: Pet Drone #1 winning first place for the Agendo Art Prize.
Defend the planet. Defeat poverty.
This September 25, a Global Citizen Live event will bring together artists, leaders and global citizens from all over the world, to defend the planet and defeat poverty. Hugh Evans, 2008 John Monash Scholar runs the company Global Citizen and his event will be broadcast across many media platforms including TIME. The digital TIME Magazine has also published details about the event which emphasises that global cooperation is our only hope to recover from the COVID-19 pandemic. The results of 9-years of off-shore processing
Madeline Gleeson, 2012 John Monash Scholar, has co-authored a policy brief on behalf of UNSW’s Andrew and Renata Kaldor Centre for International Refugee Law. The Kaldor Centre has also interviewed Madeline in a recent podcast episode. The SBS and The Conversation have since published articles citing Madeline’s work which outlines the human and financial cost of these policies. This week marks the 9th year anniversary since the off-shore processing policy commenced.

Dr Alexandra Phelan, infectious disease expert and 2013 Pratt Foundation John Monash Scholar, has taken a guest speaking spot on the 7AM podcast. With Australians feeling exhausted after 18 months of intermittent lock downs, the compliance of public health measures is dropping off. In this podcast published by independent company Shwartz Media, Alexandra uses her expertise to forecast what the end game looks like.
