Frances Voon - Most Influential Asian Australian
The 40 Under 40 Most Influential Asian-Australian Awards are in their third year and serve as a critical reminder of the need to elevate Asian-Australian representation in senior leadership roles across Australia’s private and public institutions. Frances Voon, 2008 John Monash Scholar is a recipient of this prestigious award in the category of Community & Advocacy / Not for Profit. The awards have celebrated Frances’ work as a refugee lawyer who is advancing the rights of forced migrants.
Fergus Green, 2012 John Monash Scholar has commenced work as a Lecturer in Political Theory and Public Policy at University College London. Read his article: “Counting carbon or counting coal? Anchoring climate governance in fossil fuel-based accountability frameworks”, recently published by The London School of Economics and Political Science. Fergus has also featured in an episode of ePODstemology which shares his thoughts on how to tackle climate change and avoid social misery.
Prashanti receives Michael Marmot Studentship
Congratulations to Dr Prashanti Manchikanti, 2020 Helen and Michael Gannon John Monash Scholar, who has been awarded a Michael Marmot Studentship for the MSc Social Epidemiology. The studentship, is offered by University College London and is designed to support her participation in their MSc Social Epidemiology course. Prashanti is soon to depart for London to commence her study.
Time to strengthen Australia-Indonesia partnership
Indonesia will be Australia’s closest and arguably most important bilateral relationship over the next 30 years, by which time Indonesia is projected to be the world’s fourth-largest economy. Andrew Hudson, 2005 John Monash Scholar has been published in the Jakarta Post in collaboration with Dewi Fortuna Anwar, former Deputy Secretary for Political Affairs to the Vice President of Indonesia. They argue that our governments should grasp the opportunity of this rare in-person meeting to accelerate a new era in Australian-Indonesian relations and have specific steps they can take on terrorism, Afghanistan, Myanmar, displacement and covid.
The association between diabetes and glaucoma
Since completing his studies at Harvard University, 2019 Chairman's Circle John Monash Scholar Dr William Mitchell has returned to Australia and commenced work with the Ophthalmology Registrar at The Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital. He has also recently co-published an academic paper entitled: Association Between Diabetes, Diabetic Retinopathy, and Glaucoma. Though the relationship between these remains controversial, William has evidence that explores treatment options that could link these diseases. William is also Clinical Research Fellow at Massachusetts Eye and Ear.
Protecting the elderly from COVID-19
The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the extreme vulnerability of older people and other individuals who reside in long-term care, creating an urgent need for evidence-based policy that can adequately protect these community members. At the request of Australian Government policymakers, Dr Garang Dut 2017 Roth/Segal John Monash Harvard Scholar has co-authored an academic publication.
Unpicking the legacy of the Tampa
2012 John Monash Scholar, Madeline Gleeson, has penned an essay which has been published in Inside Story (the principal partner for this publication is The Judith Neilson Institute for Journalism and Ideas). In the essay, Madeline asks – can we use a once-in-a-lifetime pandemic to help us rethink our treatment of refugees? This publication is another informative piece which has formed part of Madeline’s campaign on behalf of UNSW’s Kaldor Centre to draw attention to the 20th anniversary of the off-shore processing policy.
