Professor Mark Dawson recognised as one of Australia's most distinguished scientists
Congratulations to Professor Mark Dawson, 2006 John Monash Scholar for his new fellowship with the Australian Academy of Science. Fellows of the Academy are among the nation’s most distinguished scientists, elected by their peers for ground-breaking research and contributions which have made a clear impact. Part of the work that Mark is recognised for is the discovery of how cancer can hide in the immune system of Tasmanian Devils, which he describes as a game changer for developing new drug combinations that could treat some aggressive cancers.
Make government ownership of the electricity sector an asset, not a curse
The Morrison government has announced a new gas power plant for the Hunter Valley but Arjuna Dibley, 2016 Woodside John Monash Scholar, suggests the way forward is for government-owned companies to work with private firms to bridge the gap between widespread adoption of clean technology that will benefit taxpayers, the private sector and consumers. Asking Snowy Hydro to build a gas-fired power plant and continue to rely on decades-old hydroelectric technology is a huge investment risk and it doesn't have to be this way.
Vogue magazine empowering entrepreneurial females
Breaking away from the runway and focusing on inspirational entrepreneurs is a fresh approach for Vogue, who have created Vogue Codes as a way to promote and empower Australian women. They recently interviewed a selection of rural and regional entrepreneurs to gain advice on launching a successful business in the country. Jillian Kilby, 2013 BHP John Monash Scholar was interviewed as part of this, as her journey as a regional businesswomen continues to inspire many.
