Alies is a writer and director, who tells entertaining stories that push boundaries and challenge stereotypes. In 2022, she directed an episode of acclaimed ABC comedy series Aftertaste, starring Erik Thomson, Rachel Griffiths and Natalie Abbott. Her TV series, The Astrogirl Column, is currently in development funded by Screen Australia. She’s also a 2020 BAFTA Newcomer and a Berlinale Talent. Her short, Ayaan was longlisted for an Academy Award®, winning 30+ awards including an Australian Directors Guild (ADG) Award, Best International Short at Show Me Shorts Festival (NZ), and a National Board of Review Motion Pictures Award (U.S.) Myth also won an ADG and was selected for the 2022 Melbourne International Film Festival and won the Rebel 8 Outstanding Emerging Female Director Award at the 2023 Flickerfest International Short Film Festival. While at Columbia University as a John Monash Scholar Alies completed a Master of Fine Arts in Film, was also a Screenwriting Fellow and was awarded the university’s top screenwriting prize - the Ezra Litwak Award. Alies was recently presented with an award for Best Direction in a Short Film, Australian Directors Guild. Prior to becoming Director at Picture Box Productions Alies worked as a violinist and AACTA nominated film and TV composer, performing in over 55 countries. She is a composer of feature films, documentaries, television (CNN, ABC, BBC, Foxtel, SBS), music, theatre and dance productions and has guest lectured at the Elder Conservatorium of Music, University of Adelaide and Central Saint Martin's University of the Arts London. As a violinist and musical director, she has performed in over 50 countries.
