Owen is a clinician-scientist, and in 2013 earned a combined DPhil/PhD from The University of Oxford and The Scripps Research Institute, where he worked under the supervision of 2011 Nobel Laureate Professor Bruce Beutler. His research interests include the genetic architecture of immunity, and the role of genetic variation in health and illness. After being awarded a Sir Henry Wellcome Postdoctoral Fellowship at the University of Cambridge, he returned to Australia to continue clinical training. He is currently Associate Professor, Program Director - Genomics and Inherited Disease / Laboratory Head - Genomic Medicine, Garvan Institute of Medical Research.
