Hugh has a Bachelor of Economics from Macquarie University and a Bachelor of Asian Studies with 1st Class Honours and the University Medal from the Australian National University. Hugh is passionate about strengthening Australia's engagement with Asia, and has supported this through his work as a policy adviser in the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet, a co-founder of the Australia-Indonesia Youth Association, a development volunteer in Indonesia and Timor-Leste, as Manager of Strategy for Asialink. He participates in a wide variety of sports, speaks fluent Indonesian, and is learning the ukulele. Hugh is studying for a Masters of Public Policy at the Harvard Kennedy School. He is majoring in international relations, with a particular emphasis on Southeast Asia, working from the Kennedy School's Belfer Centre, the top-ranked university-based think tank in the world. Upon completing his Masters, Hugh plans to work in both the government and non-government sectors focusing on how Australia can most effectively capitalise on the opportunities of the Asia-Pacific region.
