Melanie's John Monash Scholarship supported her undertaking a Masters of Science in Epidemiology at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. Melanie subsequently completed a PhD through the European Union-funded Transdisciplinary Global Health Joint Doctorate program at the University of Amsterdam, ISGlobal Barcelona and The Institute of Tropical Medicine Antwerp. Her doctoral research focused on the micro-epidemiology of malaria in pre-elimination settings in Vietnam and Cambodia. Melanie returned to Australia in late 2018 and is currently a Principal Advisor at the Nossal Institute for Global Health at the University of Melbourne, working on international One Health and health security projects. Over the past 5 years, Melanie has been the lead author on several major reports on regional health security, contributed to strengthening surveillance of antimicrobial resistance across human and animal health sectors, and developed One Health training on outbreaks and antimicrobial resistance for global training programs. Melanie’s One Health expertise extends to environmental and plant health, including innovative surveillance approaches for crop pests and diseases, and research on climate and infectious disease outbreaks.
