AI that perpetuates healthcare disparities
Dr William Mitchell, 2019 Chairman’s Circle John Monash Scholar has co-authored a research article titled: Sources of bias in artificial intelligence that perpetuate healthcare disparities – A global review. The research describes the landscape of AI (artificial intelligence) in clinical medicine to better understand disparities in data sources and patient populations, revealing that 40% of clinical AI data comes from China and America. While AI can create opportunities for immediate decision making in healthcare, populations with data-rich regions will benefit better in comparison to data-poor regions, which can consequentially exacerbate health inequalities.
